Common Mistakes When Buying Nickel Strip in Bulk in India

A bulk nickel strip order that goes wrong is expensive to fix, reprinting production schedules, re-welding test batches, or sitting on stock that does not quite fit your pack. Most bulk-order problems trace back to a handful of avoidable mistakes. Here they are, from the supply side.
Mistake 1: Ordering by thickness alone, ignoring tolerance
Every strip has a manufacturing tolerance on thickness and width, even within the same nominal size. If your weld settings are tuned tightly to one exact thickness, a shipment at the tolerance limit can behave differently on your line. Ask your supplier for the tolerance range on your exact size, and if your process is tolerance-sensitive, request a pre-shipment sample from the actual production batch, not a generic sample.
Mistake 2: Skipping the sample stage to save time
It is tempting to place a full bulk order straight from a catalogue listing, especially under schedule pressure. But the fastest route to a delayed schedule is discovering a weld or fit issue only after the full shipment arrives. A short sample-and-test cycle, even a few days, is cheaper than a failed production batch. See our supplier evaluation checklist for what to test.
Mistake 3: Underestimating lead time for custom sizes
Standard sizes like 1P 8x0.15 mm are typically quick to source. A custom width, a punched 2P shape with a specific centre distance, or a non-standard plating spec takes longer. Confirm actual lead time for your exact size in writing before committing a production date around it.
Mistake 4: Not accounting for minimum order quantity in your cash flow
Bulk pricing is attractive, but tying up working capital in strip inventory you will not use for months is a real cost. Match your order quantity to your realistic production run over the next few months, not just the best price break.
Mistake 5: Ignoring storage conditions after delivery
Nickel strip that arrives in good condition can still degrade in storage, especially during the monsoon. Strip left unsealed in a humid store room oxidises, which can cause inconsistent welds months after a perfectly good delivery. Store sealed with silica gel, and open only what you need for near-term production.
Mistake 6: Not confirming the SKU matches your design, not just the product name
Product names across suppliers (and sometimes within the same supplier's older and newer listings) can look similar for genuinely different sizes. Always confirm the SKU, width, thickness and CD (centre distance, for 2P strips) against your actual design drawing before placing a bulk order, not just the product title.
Mistake 7: Treating price per kg as the only comparison point
A lower price per kg on thinner or lower-grade strip can mean more strip by length is needed to match your design's current rating, or more frequent production defects. Compare total cost for your actual pack design, not just the headline rate. Our pricing guide covers how to compare quotes properly.

Frequently asked questions
How much tolerance is normal on nickel strip thickness?
This varies by manufacturer and grade. Ask your supplier for the specific tolerance on your size, and if your welding process is tolerance-sensitive, request a sample from the actual production batch.
How long should I store nickel strip before it degrades?
Properly sealed with silica gel in dry conditions, strip can be stored for extended periods. The main risk is humidity exposure, particularly during the monsoon, which causes surface oxidation.
Should I always order the cheapest quote?
Not without checking what is behind the price: grade, plating thickness, tolerance and lead time all affect whether a cheaper quote is actually a better deal for your specific pack design.
Can Arambhika confirm a custom size before I order in bulk?
Yes, share your design drawing or specifications on WhatsApp and we will confirm size, lead time and pricing before you place a bulk order.
