Nickel Strip for Solar Street Light and Off-Grid Lighting Battery Packs

India’s solar street lighting and off-grid lantern programmes, across municipal, rural electrification and export markets, use large numbers of small lithium packs. These packs draw modest current to run an LED through the night, but live outdoors for years, charging and discharging daily in sun, rain and dust. The interconnect needs to be reliable for the long haul, not necessarily high-current.
A low-current, long-outdoor-life application
Unlike an EV or power tool pack, a solar street light draws a small, steady current to run an LED for several hours each night. The real challenge is not current capacity, it is surviving years of daily charge-discharge cycles outdoors, often in a sealed fixture that gets hot in direct sun and damp during monsoon.
Plated strip is usually the right economic choice
Because current draw is low, nickel-plated strip is typically sufficient and keeps the cost per light down, important for large municipal or export orders where thousands of lights use the same pack design. See 1P plated strip for simple single-cell-row packs common in solar lanterns, or a 2P strip for parallel-cell layouts in larger street light packs.
What actually matters for this application
- Corrosion resistance over current capacity. A light that lives outdoors for 3-5+ years needs strip that resists rust even with occasional moisture ingress into the fixture.
- Consistent weld quality across a large production run. At the volumes typical of municipal solar lighting programmes, a small defect rate compounds into many field failures. Build in a pull-test sampling routine across production batches.
- Simple, repeatable pack layout. Most solar lights use small 1P or 2P cell groups; there is little benefit to over-engineering the interconnect here versus a high-current application.
Where pure nickel still makes sense
For premium or longer-warranty solar lighting products, or installations in particularly harsh environments (coastal, high-dust desert sites), pure nickel strip gives extra corrosion margin, at a higher per-pack cost. This is a trade-off worth making deliberately based on your product's warranty and target market, not a default.

Frequently asked questions
Is plated nickel strip good enough for solar street lights?
For most solar street light and lantern packs, yes, since current draw is low. The priority is outdoor durability and consistent quality across production, not current capacity.
How many years should a solar light battery pack last?
This depends on your cell choice, usage pattern and build quality, and is a separate question from interconnect choice. Confirm expected life with your cell supplier and test under your actual outdoor conditions.
Should I use pure nickel for export-market solar lights?
Consider it for harsh environments (coastal, desert, high-humidity) or where your product carries a longer warranty, since it offers more corrosion margin. For standard domestic programmes, plated strip is usually sufficient.
Do you supply nickel strip for large municipal lighting tenders?
Yes, we supply bulk quantities with consistent quality and GST invoice from Noida. Share your annual volume and pack design for a quote.
