Copper busbar for UPS and telecom backup battery packs

India’s telecom towers, data centres and home/commercial UPS systems are steadily moving from lead-acid to lithium, chasing longer life, lower maintenance and a smaller footprint. These packs have a different duty cycle from an EV: they sit fully charged for long stretches, then discharge hard during a power cut. That pattern puts the emphasis on long-term reliability over outright peak power.

A different duty cycle from EV packs

A UPS or telecom backup pack spends most of its life on float charge, waiting. When the grid fails, it discharges, sometimes for hours at a telecom tower with no grid backup nearby. Unlike an e-bike pack cycled daily, these packs may see far fewer full cycles but need to work reliably on the one cycle that matters, sometimes years after installation. That changes the priority: corrosion resistance and joint stability over years matter as much as current capacity.

Why pure nickel and tin-coated copper suit this application

Sizing for backup loads

Size interconnects for the pack's worst-case discharge current during a power cut, not the gentle float-charge current it sees most of the time. A telecom tower backing up active radio equipment, or a UPS supporting a data centre rack, can draw substantial sustained current during an outage. Use our copper busbar sizing guide to size the busbar for that discharge current, with margin for the duration of a typical outage in your area.

Maintenance-light by design

One reason operators move to lithium with bolted busbar connections is reduced maintenance versus lead-acid. Still, periodic torque checks on busbar joints and a visual inspection for corrosion are worth scheduling, especially in coastal or high-humidity sites, as part of routine tower/site maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Why use tin-coated copper busbar for telecom backup packs?

Tin coating resists tarnishing better than bare copper, which helps keep joint resistance low and stable over years of standby duty, especially in humid or coastal sites.

How is sizing different for a UPS pack versus an EV pack?

Size for your worst-case discharge current during an outage and how long outages typically last in your area, rather than for frequent high-current cycling like an EV sees.

Is pure nickel strip necessary for a small home UPS pack?

For smaller, lower-current home UPS packs, plated strip may be adequate. For telecom towers or data centre backup with higher sustained currents, pure nickel is the safer choice.

Do you supply custom-length copper busbars for UPS racks?

Yes, send your terminal spacing and quantity and we will quote a custom length.
